THE December meeting of the Hereford and Mid Wales Philatelic Society is traditionally the Christmas party with entertainment provided by the society president.

Frank Bennett, for the second time in this role, succeeded admirably in entertaining, not only members but the many non collecting guests too.

He gave a short display on the history of the postcard; from which we learned that these were invented to make sorting mail easier for the post office staff rather than the convenience of the users!

The main display was a wide selection of postcards of Old Hereford.

Numerous street scenes showed buildings long since demolished and many family run shops, now part of larger stores or sadly gone completely. Together with cards showing schools and pubs, there was plenty to discuss afterwards over the Christmas fare provided.

The next meeting on January 9 will be held in the afternoon from 2pm till 4pm at St Martins Hall, Ross Road, Hereford, when members will be invited to give displays of anything but stamps!

Postage stamps will however, feature again in February, when the meeting returns to its normal time of 7.30pm. Visitors and new members always welcome.
