SUPPORT is growing for the Hereford Times appeal to create a memorial to wartime radar pioneer Alan Blumlein.

We want to site a plaque at the place where he and 10 colleagues were killed in a 1942 plane crash in Herefordshire.

This is what people are saying about our campaign:

Bill Wiggin (MP for North Herefordshire): "My personal congratulations and thanks for your worthy crusade to remember this remarkable man.

"The cavity magnetron inside the Halifax that crashed, killing all on board, was so secret that Alan Blumlein’s death was not made public for three years.

"We should remember those who lost their lives in the service of our nation and I would like to thank all those who felt able to contribute to this memorial. So many truly remarkable men and women, who fought in so many different ways, have left us today with the priceless gift of freedom.

Jesse Norman (MP for Hereford and South Herefordshire): "What a great project. I have contributed £100. Please keep me posted on progress."

Joe Kerr: "Well done! And best of luck – a very fitting act of remembrance."

David Borthwick: "Although a very sad story, an interesting piece of local history with wider overtones."

Teresa Godbert: "In memory of those lost in this tragic air accident and with great respect for the scientists’ work from my mother’s 1994 account entitled a Few Personal Reminiscences of The Directorate of Radar WW2."

Neil Ivison: "A worthy cause tribute to a great man."

Paul Konig: "Brilliant idea. All recording engineers know his achievements."

Andrew Jones: "A fitting memorial to 11 courageous and talented men in a beautiful setting."

David Young: "Being a hi-fi enthusiast for many years, I'm well aware of Alan Blumlein's contribution to the development of stereo sound. A tribute to this and his war work are long overdue."

John Bromley-Davenport (biographer of Sir Bernard Lovell and commentator on the link between Lovell and Blumlein): "Brilliant and overdue. £25 on way.

Mike P: "I’m reading Echoes of War by Sir Bernard Lovell at the moment which ties in well. I also worked for EMI at Hayes."

John Preissler: "Well done. It’s about time Alan Blumlein was remembered. I knew of this event many years ago and visited the crash site back in the 1970s."

David A Scaysbrook (consultant forensic scientist): "Many thanks for highlighting the tragic death of Alan Blumlein.

"I came across the incredible story of the crash of Halifax V9977 at Welsh Bicknor a few years ago.

"I donated the fee Garway kindly gave me to the Hereford Times appeal for the memorial plaque, less £5 for travel expenses (my donation was a total of £145 for all my recent Alan Blumlein talks, hope to give more in due course).

"I feel that the 11 men who died on June 7, 1942, deserve to be remembered.

"They died not only fighting fascism but also progressing the cause of science. However, I quickly realised that very few people, even locals, know about their sacrifice."

Caryn Tomlinson, Senior Vice-president, Global Communications Chair, EMI Archive Trust, Universal Music Group: "Very committed to being part of this memorial."
