THE legacy of SAS legend Brummie Stokes will continue in Hereford thanks to a climbing centre in Holmer.

Taste for Adventure's Boulder Barn opened in September at Holmer Trading Estate after moving from its Credenhill site.

Brummie and his wife, Lynn, first started Taste for Adventure in 1991 and moved to the Credenhill base in 1996.

Last year the Stokes family needed to find a new base and began their search for a new location within the city limits.

Brummie died, aged 70, in January 2016 and Lynn and his two sons, Sam and Ben, were determined to continue his legacy so were pleased to find the Holmer site.

Lynn said: "It is a lovely new beginning for the centre. Brum would have loved it. He would have said well done."

As well as welcoming paying customers who wish to climb, Taste for Adventure is a charity which aims to help young and elderly people, who are disadvantaged or ‘at risk’ in life.

Less privileged young people can get involved in sporting and adventurous pursuits.

Lynn also started providing hot lunches to the elderly from 1998, which continues to this day.

She said: "It is a real family community - a climbing family."

There are bespoke bouldering walls at the new site, including a competition wall.

There is also a MoonBoard which is a 40-degree bouldering training wall where many different climbing routes can be illuminated on the board.

There is a cafe at the centre for climbers to sit and relax afterwards, or for those who just want to watch.

Sam and Ben made tables for the cafe from the wood in the outdoor area at the site in Credenhill.

Lynn said: "When Brummie first came to Hereford they found a huge piece of wood in the river.

"They carried it back to the camp and they made it into a drinking table called the Valhalla. I said we have got to have a Valhalla drinking table."

As a result there is a large table made from the reclaimed wood which has been nicknamed the Valhalla.

The first climbing club for children (aged nine plus) called Grizzly Bears starts on November 24 and will run every Saturday from 9.30am to 10.30am. It costs £11. Booking essential.

There is also a Student Wednesday from 12pm to 4pm with £5 climbing and free coaching every Monday from 5pm onwards.
