A NATIONAL gym chain has submitted plans to convert the former Maplin store in Hereford.

The proposal by Pure Gym Ltd seeks permission to change the use of the empty unit at Spur Retail Park on Holmer Road from class A1 to D2.

This would allow for a 24-hour gymnasium to open there which could bring up to 15 jobs to the city.

Jack Hobbs, who prepared the supporting report on behalf of the applicant, said the scheme was in line with national planning policies and would help promote healthier lifestyles and deliver social and economic benefits.

He said: “PureGym was established in 2009 and provides affordable gym membership on a flexible, no contract basis.

“Gyms operate on a 24-hour basis, seven days a week, providing access to the whole community, including those who work irregular shift patterns.”

The proposed gym would comprise of a main area, studio, free weights area, a spin area along with changing facilities and showers.

The plans would also see an additional mezzanine floor created which would increase the floorspace to a total of 7814 sq ft.

Residents have until October 26 to comment on the scheme and Herefordshire Council planners are expected to determine it by November 13.
