TWO Herefordshire producers are through to the national final of Delicious magazine's produce awards.

Wild by Nature Meats in Longtown and Wye Valley Salads from Ross-on-Wye will both represent the Midlands at the finals, which will be held in London in October.

The woodland reared pork sausages from Wild by Nature have been selected for the final and are produced at a family farm at the foot of the Black Mountains in Longtown.

Wild by Nature was founded by chef Jake Townley as he set out to use his experience working for top chefs such as Nathan Outlaw and Rene Redzepi to go back to the basics and showcase the best of British produce.

He said: “By being based on the farm it allows us a unique opportunity to gain maximum control over every stage of the process.

"All of our pigs are native breeds and are kept to around double the age of an intensively reared pig. This gives the flavour time to develop and we get a beautiful rose colour to our pork due to the amount of exercise that they do as they forage in the woods for nuts and roots.

"We are big believers in a ‘less but better’ philosophy on meat and hope that through our efforts to link directly with our customers we can provide tastier, more ethical and more nutritious meat."

As well as producing monthly meat boxes they also host weddings and seasonal feasts from their restored barn and wood-fired kitchen on the farm.

Wye Valley Salads' Barba di Frate, edible flowers and Wye Valley salad have been selected for the final.

Started eight years ago as Veggies Galore the company produce and supply local pubs, chefs and businesses.

They grow chemical-free products and all the salads are hand-picked to order.

Amanda Stradling runs the business with chief vegetable taster Wombat, the family Jack Russell.

Judges for the East and West Midlands regional heat included John Wigley, Alison Swan Parente and Glynn Purnell.
