IT was not that long ago that Kenny Miller picked up his first point as Livingston player-manager in the club’s Scottish Premiership week 2 match against Kilmarnock. The Musselburgh-born player took over the reins of the club in July however, left after just seven weeks into the role. We look back at the highs and lows of Kenny Miller’s career.

Playing career

Livingston were Miller’s tenth different club to play for during his 20-plus year professional career. After starting his career with Hibs, Miller moved to Rangers before signing with English side Wolverhampton in 2001. The Lothian native struck the back of the net 52 times in 167 matches for Wolves.

After moves to Celtic and Derby County left something to be desired from Miller, he signed with Rangers in 2008. It was during his second Rangers’ spell that Miller became one of the most popular marksmen to play at the club. He plundered 49 goals in just 81 matches for the Glasgow team at the time.

Miller went on a sojourn after his Rangers’ exit that took him to Turkey’s Bursaspor, Wales’ Cardiff City, and Canada’s Vancouver Whitecaps and the goals kept on coming for Miller. The striker found his way back to Rangers in 2014. Back in blue, Miller scored 34 further goals in 111 fixtures. Bettors on Fortuna were really happy with these results and his average goal per match ratio.

Managerial career

Following a fallout with former Rangers’ manager Graeme Murty, Miller left the club at the end of last season and was then appointed manager of Livingston in July.

The former Rangers’ striker had a lot to live up to as Livingston boss. David Hopkin took the club to back-to-back promotions before leaving the Almondvale Stadium in May. Hopkin took Livingston into the Premiership thanks to winning the promotion playoffs.

Before his departure, Miller obtained just one point from a possible six. It may not have been the start he had hoped for; however, Livingston had the unenviable task of starting the season with reigning champions Celtic at Parkhead.

Kenny Miller – The disillusion

Despite the promises and the good start, Kenny Miller left his post after only 7 weeks as a player-boss.

The club explained that the position of a boss-player wasn’t adapted for Livingston and would rather “revert to a full-time manager’s role”.

As Kenny Miller didn’t want to end his career, the club and the former manager agreed together to end his contract.

Miller has always been honest with the club, his ambition and what he expects, hence the fact that the story ends in good terms. In fact, he even mentioned that he will never leave his dream to manage Rangers in the coming years.

After four games, Livingston is at the fourth position of the league with two victories, one draw and one defeat. Miller’s departure shouldn’t be a reason for all the supporters who will still bet on the Plymouthwhalers in the coming weeks!
