Internationally acclaimed artists will support St Michael’s Hospice during an eight-day exhibition and art sale at a stunning Herefordshire venue boasting a growing reputation.

Canwood – An Art Showcase will feature the specially produced work of more than 40 artists covering a wide range of media from ceramics and paint to metal and glass.

The exhibition is part of h.Art week and takes place at Canwood Gallery, near Checkley from September 8 to 16. Artists include Simon Dorrell, Halima Cassell and Paul Oz, plus partners Lois Hopwood and Tony Hall.

Commission on the sale of each item will be donated by Canwood to St Michael’s Hospice in Hereford.

‘We are delighted to be helping St Michael’s Hospice and we’re really looking forward to Canwood,’ said Tony, a potter and sculptor based at Castle Hill Arts in Knucklas, near Knighton.

He will be exhibiting stoneware pieces at Canwood alongside Lois, his partner, who will take the large landscape drawings for which she is renowned.

Canwood Gallery is the brainchild of Stephen Dale whose love for making modern art accessible to the public arose on a trip to the Tate in London in the 1970s while undergoing drug trials for leukaemia.

During his visit he became gripped by Carl Andre’s infamous Equivalent VIII better known as ‘the bricks’. He later bought another of Andre’s works, called Isoclast 07 for his new gallery.

Since opening Canwood, the gallery has welcomed projects by artists and photographers as well-known as Henri Matisse and John Bulmer.

An Art Showcase will be its largest charity exhibition to date: "Canwood – An Art Showcase is an exciting exhibition at a venue which will take everyone’s breath away," said Paddy Nugent, the Hospice’s Community Fundraising Manager.

"We’re delighted to welcome such a breadth of talented artists whose work has been sold around the globe.

"The generosity shown by Canwood has also been heart-warming and we are truly grateful to Stephen Dale and his family for helping us put on this thrilling exhibition."
