KINGTON certainly does things differently when it comes to pub sports.

For alongside pool, darts and skittles, drinkers in the market town also partake in a more active pastime down the local.

The 'Oxford Arms Speed Shear' was held in the eponymous pub, bringing together competitors from around Herefordshire, surrounding counties and mid Wales.

Abbeydore speed shearer Frank Lloyd walked away with one of the top honours when he beat around 30 sheep shearers.

It was the seventh time the unusual charity event has been held and it is thought that the Kington watering hole is the only pub to hold such an event inside on a stage.

Organiser and former Kington Young Farmers Committee member James Lewis, said: “This was the seventh annual event and it worked really well again.

“Over the years we have raised lots of money for the air ambulance but it started out as a fun event and we never really expected to raise almost £10,000. We will be doing everything we can to smash the £10,000 target next year.”

He added: “We want to thank everyone who has helped and supported the event.”

Fred Hawkins from the Oxford Arms said: “There were lots of young farmers club members here, plus locals, and it was a brilliant night. It was good fun but it also raised a lot of money for the air ambulance and that is why we let them hold the event here.”

Categories were divided into junior competitors, intermediate, open and senior.

Alongside Frank Lloyd, fellow Herefordian Josh Hargest scooped the top prize in the junior section.
