INDEPENDENT school Christ College, Brecon, is celebrating a successful year for its Sixth Form pupils.

Against the background of uncertainty created by the full introduction of harder, linear A Levels, Christ College Brecon pupils have achieved excellent A Level results, with one in five grades being A*.

The overall pass rate reached an impressive 98%, with 46% of grades being A*/A; 70% of grades being A*-B; and 84% of grades being A*-C.

Performance in maths and chemistry was very high with 32% and 38% of grades at A* respectively, a performance closely followed by physics with 29% at this elite level.

On the basis of these results, many Christ College pupils will now proceed to top universities including Oxford, Cambridge and elite Russell Group institutions to study for highly selective courses.

Pupils from Herefordshire did brilliantly. Leading the way are Cai Williams from Woonton, Herefordshire, who achieved an impressive three A*s, and head boy Harry Roberts from Shobdon, Leominster, who got one A and two Bs. Before joining Christ College, Cai attended Moorpark Prep school in Shropshire and Harry attended Abberley Hall School in Worcestershire. Next year, Cai will join the London School of Economics, while Harry will pursue his studies in Reading.

Head of Christ College, Gareth Pearson, said: “These are outstanding grades and we hope our pupils are as proud of their achievement as we are. We know how hard they have worked for these results, and we have tried our best to help them reach their best potential in a supportive environment.

“Such positive outcome confirms and strengthens the belief, shared by all our dedicated staff, that a whole person approach is key to the success and fulfilment of our pupils. We will be sad to see them go next year but are confident they will achieve brilliant things and wish them the best of luck.”

Set within the Brecon Beacons National Park, Christ College is an independent co-educational boarding and day school, with 370 pupils on roll between the ages of seven to 18. With strong academic provision at its core, the school provides high-quality, broad and balanced education, in a friendly, nurturing atmosphere.

These successful results follow the recent ‘excellent’ Estyn inspection of Christ College. The school achieved the highest score possible in all five areas of judgement: standards; wellbeing and attitude to learning; teaching and learning experiences; care, support and guidance; and leadership and management.
