A DOG owner wants to warn others after her pet was set upon at a beauty spot.

Bryony Maddox from Weston-under-Penyard was walking her two year old Shih Tzu called Russell on May Hill, which is between Ross-on-Wye and Gloucester.

The 23 year old had walked to the top of the hill on a Thursday evening between 7pm and 8pm.

She said: "We were sat at the top. I heard some barking in the distance and I didn't think anything of it.

"We started walking down and then from nowhere four dogs came running towards us and they were growling and barking.

"Russell was so frightened he ran away."

The dogs caught up and were stood over Russell snarling and growling.

Bryony added: "If he had given it back they would have mauled him. I thought that was going to happen. I was trying to get to him."

Russell managed to get away and run back to Bryony who picked her dog up.

Luckily Russell escaped without any injuries but she said it could have been a lot worse.

She said the four dogs looked like Australian Cattle Dogs. She said the owner of the dogs was quite far away and he was whistling for his dogs to return. He had two with him which were on leads.

The dogs finally retreated but Bryony said the owner did not come to check if they were ok.

Another couple came up to her and said a similar thing had happened to them. They reported the incident to the police.

Bryony said she will not walk up there again because of it. Russell wasn't on a lead - Bryony said: "I have never needed it up there. He stays by me all the time. I just didn't expect it."

Bryony wants to warn others.

She said: "He's ok now but the evening after it happened he was really shaken up. He spent the whole evening with his tail between his legs."
