AN artist from Herefordshire has been named as one of this year's chosen artists for Wimbledon.

Glass artist Nancy Sutcliffe of Canon Bridge, near Madley, and her partner Katie Huskie from Wiltshire are the Wimbledon Championship Artists for 2018.

Specialist glassblower Katie will be producing two free-blown glass roundels, each nearly a metre in diameter.

From her studio in the Herefordshire countryside Nancy will then be engraving iconic imagery from Wimbledon on the giant discs, using water-gilded platinum and gold leaf.

Nancy said: “We are very proud to have won this commission. The Wimbledon artist is usually a painter, but this year the selection committee made what I think is a bold choice to go for artworks in glass.

“This is a very special honour, too, because it marks the 150th anniversary of the club.”

Nancy and Katherine visited Wimbledon during this year’s championships to soak up the atmosphere and help them finalise the details of the design, which will be installed in the Wimbledon Clubhouse at the end of this year.

The proposal by Nancy and Katie was chosen by a committee of the All England Tennis Club after presentations from a shortlist of three finalists. They had been selected from a total of 26 artists who had submitted entries.
