GERMAN budget supermarket Lidl has submitted plans to build a store in Ross-on-Wye.

The proposals would involve demolition of Wolf Business Park on Gloucester Road and building the shop on the 4.7-acre site.

The new store would have 14,262 sq ft of sales floorspace and 127 parking spaces with an extra 30 places for bicycles.

Architects working on the scheme say the high-quality design will improve the site and vehicle access will be from the existing Alton Road entrance.

Local resident Adrian Soble said the store was much needed due to the increasing population of Hildersley and residential and employment areas to the eastern side of Ross.

While Hom Green resident, Jeffrey Wheeler, said: “My wife and I support this proposal fully believing it will enhance the retail opportunities in Ross and its environs considering the current and recent proposed housing development.”

But Paul Symonds, an objector, said he was concerned over traffic and highways safety at peak times.

He said: “The junction of Alton Road and Gloucester Road has significant queuing.

“So, I fail to see how vehicles will safely exit the site towards Gloucester Road which would force more traffic south towards existing pinch points at Alton Street or into Camp Road.”

Residents have until August 9 to comment on the proposals and Herefordshire Council planners are expected to consider the plans by October 3.
