HEREFORD and Mid Wales Philatelic Society has completed a splendid season of meetings, with good attendances enjoying a range of speakers, in-house displays and an exchange with another local society.
In April, members were encouraged to display nine sheets on a subject of their choice, and no less than 16 displays resulted, on subjects as diverse as New Zealand Post Office loyalty reward stamps; South African George V varieties; Burma Definitives and GB Christmas 2017 postmarks.
In May Alan Godfrey, Chris Jackson and Robin Jarman from Redditch P.S. entertained members with extracts from their award winning displays of Needlemakers (even managing to include a saucy Victorian postcard) and Midland Red bus company parcel express services, together with some Chilean air-mails.
In June the society held its annual competition evening when, against stiff competition Nick Nelson won the President's Trophy for Traditional Philately with an entry of Colombian Private and Local Express Posts.
John Henshall managed to win both the Founder's Postal History Cup with his entry of Panton Taxed Covers to the Cayman Islands; and the Shingler Thematic Trophy with an excellent entry entitled Preserve the Polar Regions.
For the final meeting of the season in July members welcomed the society's oldest member, Athur Dyball who presented an enthralling display of Italian and German stamps of the Fascist period.
The society commences its new season on September 5 at St Martins Hall, Hereford at 7.30pm with an evening of members displaying recent acquisitions.
Visitors and new members welcome. Contact Janet Nelson, Hon. Sec. at fascinatinglady@hotmail.com
