HEREFORDSHIRE Samaritans was delighted that Jo Denyer, one of its longest-serving volunteers, was invited to attend the garden party held by Prince Charles to honour the work of the Prince of Wales' Charities in his 70th year. He has been a patron of Samaritans for a number of years.

Jo was in good company as, apart from representatives from other Samaritan Branches, Prince Harry and his new wife Meghan Markle were making their first appearance as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Jo has been a listening volunteer in Hereford since 1981 and was one of its first directors. She is someone who epitomises all that Samaritans stands for - empathy and an understanding of people and their problems without at any time being judgmental or offering advice. She is a much-loved member of the branch and her warmth, sense of humour and willingness to be involved in the many activities that Samaritans undertake is greatly valued.

Prince Charles was presented with a personalised photo gift, representing the number of calls for help Samaritans had answered since he became Patron. Over that 19 years, Samaritans have responded to approximately 96.8 million calls for help.

Jo said afterwards "What a wonderful experience. I met so many 'Sams' from all over the country and it was a great honour to be there representing our very special branch."
