TENBURY CC skipper Robbie Farrar says although it was the England football team’s exploits that left him without a team on Saturday, it was the safety of his younger players that prompted him to cancel both fixtures.

Farrar received a predictable mass withdrawal of players at the weekend for first and second team fixtures against West Malvern, with most unavailable personnel telling the captain they had holiday plans as England’s footballers were beating Sweden 2-0 in a World Cup quarter final in the afternoon.

“We had enough [players] for the seconds but they would have had to come up into the firsts and they included a lot of young players,” said Farrar. “Against a side of the quality of West Malvern I thought it may be a bit dangerous. I tried to take their welfare into consideration and it would certainly have been highly demoralising for the 13 and 14-year-olds who would have had to play.”

Tenbury will be fined and face a points deduction that, if applied to the seconds as well as the first team, could pitch the former into the relegation picture in the Worcestershire League’s Division Four 2nd XI competition.
