ON June 2, Ross Penyard Singers proved that they know how to please a crowd with their latest concert entitled That's Entertainment.

It took the audience on a musical journey from 1800 to 2000, with a selection of songs from the history of popular music.

This encompassed songs popular in the music halls of the late Victorian era such as Daisy Bell, through to songs written by Abba and Elton John.

Several members of the choir performed solo items, as well as a performance by a Barber Shop quintet.

The very generous audience helped the choir to raise a substantial sum of money for the choir's chosen charity, which this year is Ross Meeting Centre.

A good night out was had by all, with many members of the audience commenting on how much the choir members seemed to be enjoying themselves.

This was the last concert to be held under the guidance of John Frith, the musical director of Ross Penyard Singers for over ten years.

John first came into contact with the choir in 2006 when they sang an original piece of music composed by John called The Wanderer.

This set eight poems by John Masefield to music for choir and orchestra.

Shortly after this event, John was appointed musical director of the choir and has helped them to tackle many challenges over the years, including concerts exploring the music of Mozart (including Missa Brevis in D), Faure's Requiem, Dvorak's Stabat Mater and Lerner and Loewe.

During his tenure, the choir have sung on many occasions in the community, including carol singing at Labels, performances at weddings and retirement communities, as well as their two concerts a year in the spring and late autumn.

John is now moving on to pastures new in west Wales and the choir are looking for a new musical director who will relish the challenge of supporting a mixed-voice choir with 40 members.

The choir meets once a week during term time at Ashfield Park Primary School in Ross-on-Wye.

Anybody interested in applying for the post should contact the choir's chairperson, Laurie Pegrum, at chairman@rosspenyardsingers.org.uk by September 15.
