LOCAL women have been enjoying a unique way to keep fit in Ross-On-Wye.

Silver Swans has been running since April and has proved hugely popular with the over 50s community.

This nationwide programme was designed to encourage older learners to have fun and improve their health through dance with classes growing in popularity across the country and the USA.

Silver Swans was created by the Royal Academy of Dance as part of their Dance for Wellbeing Project providing older learners with the opportunity to take up ballet and experience the many health benefits and sense of joy dance brings.

Both experienced dancers and beginners ranging from 50 to 75 have enjoyed trying their hand at a pirouette or pas de chat.

Participants have noticed an improvement in their balance, posture, coordination and mobility as well as increased energy levels.

Classes have in fact been scientifically proved to reverse the effects of ageing on the brain by increasing memory function. Ross-on-Wye Swans have been excited to partake in a fun physical activity that is both creative and expressive.

Local ballet teacher Ruth Wood has been teaching for over 12 years and is thrilled to be part of this ongoing project.

Ruth is a fully qualified teacher of classical ballet and a Silver Swans licensed teacher who has been specially trained to safely adapt ballet techniques for older learners.

Sessions do not follow a particular syllabus and the format is ever changing, there is also the opportunity to learn and specially adapted dances from well-known ballets.

Above all the emphasis is on fun and enjoyment in a friendly and welcoming environment, classes are in Hereford every Tuesday morning at Saint John's Methodist Church Hall, Saint Owen Street and in the afternoon at Wyefit, Millpond St, Ross-on-Wye.
