AMATEUR photographer Andy Chadd took these pictures of a clutch of adorable woodpecker fledglings.

They may have found themselves in difficulty after falling from their nest.

Andy, who lives in Hereford, spotted them at the Symonds Yat beauty spot in Herefordshire.

He said: “There were three fledglings on the trail from the Symonds Yat Rock car park.

“One was tangled in brambles and undergrowth so I freed it.

“The others were just hopping around on the ground calling to the mother.”

Greater spotted woodpeckers like these are the smallest and least common of the three woodpeckers found in Britain. Others are the lesser spotted woodpecker and the green woodpecker.

Greater spotted woodpeckers can be distinguished from lesser spotted by the distinctive white 'sleeves' on their wings.
