PRIDE burned in the face of a small, elderly lady from Much Dewchurch as, for the second time, she watched one of her daughters assume the office of Hereford’s mayor.

On Monday evening, Margaret Vallance gained her own piece of history as the mother of the only two sisters ever to become Hereford’s first citizen.

Back in 2011-2, Margaret’s younger daughter the late Julie Woodward served as mayor and this year Julie’s elder sister Sue Boulter will hold Hereford City Council’s top position, the 637th to take the office.

Sue took over from the previous incumbent Sharon Michael at Monday’s mayormaking ceremony at the town hall.

She was proposed for office by Marcel Lloyd-Hayes and seconded by Chris Chappell both of whom praised Sue’s qualities as a ‘people person’.

Sue will be assisted in office by her husband Dave who will act as mayor’s consort and the family was made complete at the mayormaking ceremony by sons Joe and Tim and granddaughter Fern.

Retiring mayor Sharon Michael thanked the council for allowing her to serve as mayor, which had been an honour.

She and her consort Paul Neades were presented with past mayor’s and past consort’s badges while Chris Chappell paid tribute to her term in office.

The new mayor proposed Kath Dallimore-Hay as her deputy. This was seconded by Mark Dykes and passed unanimously.

The mayormaking was followed by a meal attended by councillors, officials and friends in the main hall.
