A UNIQUE village tradition will be on show in Fownhope this weekend.

The annual Heart of Oak Society Club Walk takes place on Saturday (June 2) at 10.30am.

It’s a spectacle that’s dying out in other parts of the country, but continues to thrive in this riverside village.

It appealed to the late photographer Derek Evans too and Catcher Media will be on hand over the weekend to record and re-imagine contemporary versions of his many club walk photos for their Herefordshire Life Through a Lens project.

Catcher Media’s Julia Goldsmith said: “Fownhope Heart of Oak Society can trace its roots back to the early 1800s.

"Members parade through the streets with floral sticks which make this event so unique and beautiful to photograph, we can see why Derek made an annual visit to record it. "Several club members are third and fourth generation and are proud of the event’s lineage.

"It’s an English custom in the best of traditions right here in Herefordshire and thanks to players of the National Lottery we are looking forward to capturing it for future generations.”

The Herefordshire Life Through a Lens project was awarded a National Lottery grant of £328,300 by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

It starts at 10.30am from the New Inn pub and all are welcome to join the walk. More of the Studio’s photos can be seen on the Herefordshire History website.
