SEAGULL droppings are making the city centre an eyesore, one resident said after a visit to Hereford.

Graham Vernon from Kingstone said he was surprised at how much seagull droppings he saw on the streets.

He said: "Have you not noticed the amount of bird seagull droppings all over the streets? It is absolutely disgusting.

"You have got to tip-toe around otherwise you put your foot in it."

He said he understands that seagulls have become a problem in the city but believes more should be done to clean up the mess.

Mr Vernon added: "It can't be any good for the city centre - for the traders and the businesses. It is no good just sweeping the streets. You have to look down all the time to see where you are walking.

"It needs pressure washing. When you go over to the new area - the Old Market. They get gulls over there but it is washed every day.

"We have a beautiful historical city centre. We have lots of visitors and yet, it looks absolutely disgusting.

"It really does bring the town down."

Mike Truelove, operations manager for Hereford BID, said there are a number of issues surrounding the problem.

He said: "Seagull-protected bags are issued to businesses. If you have a council waste contract they will give you a free one.

"For all BID members if you haven't got one then give a shout and we will give them one. The bags cut off the food supply to seagulls."

He said Hereford City Council fund the gull removal programme where businesses and members of the public can report where seagulls are nesting.

Mr Truelove said: "We could just wash it off but then it would be back there tomorrow. What we do see quite often it a lot of people feed the gulls in town, which does not help the situation."
