MORE businesses are being encouraged to sign up to a year long campaign to raise money for the NSPCC.

Lucy Hurds, chairman of the Herefordshire branch of the charity, launched a year fundraising campaign in January asking for 125 companies to raise £125 each.

Many companies have already signed up including Quality Care at Home which has so far raised £280.

Both the Rotary Club of Hereford and hvoss have raised £125 each.

Lucy said: "Kidwells decided they wanted a bigger challenge. They are looking at doing a 125km walk around the county going around all of the market towns. They will do it over two and a half days at the end of July. They aim to raise £1,250."

She needs around another 60 businesses or groups to sign up.

Lucy said: "It is really good the way everyone has come together to support us and do something for the children.

"It is raising awareness. It is not just a problem that is happening in other parts of the country. It is something that affects children here too."

Across Herefordshire and Worcestershire 925 sexual offences against children under the age of 16 were recorded by police last year.

There are 701 children subject to a child protection plan in the two counties and 1,050 children in care.

The money raised will go towards training more staff and volunteers to take the NSPCC's Speak Out. Stay Safe campaign to all 291 schools in the two counties.

The charity also provides a Childline service, face to face support and works with o2 to keep children safe online.

The money will be spent within Herefordshire.
