HEREFORD shoppers are predicted to spend £4.2 million on celebrating Valentine’s Day this year.

The owners of Old Market shopping centre surveyed 2,000 people and found that 72 per cent of residents would celebrate the 'romantic day'.

The Old Market are labelling this weekend as the ‘weekend of wooing’ as 38 per cert were planning to treat their loved ones prior to the day.

But Hereford love birds expecting to be woken up with a romantic breakfast in bed might be disappointed as just four per cent said they would be making breakfast in bed this year, with one in five preferring to put their culinary skills to practice for an evening meal.

And it’s not just their other halves respondents are set to treat this year either as, in some cases, mums, best friends, and pets were set to receive a Valentine’s gift too.

Alan Anderson, centre manager at Old Market, said: “Valentine’s Day is a busy time for our retailers and restaurants as shoppers look to celebrate and treat their loved ones. With more than a third of residents likely to be celebrating the weekend prior to Valentine’s Day this year, we’re looking forward to spreading the love, whether that’s helping people choose the perfect gift or welcoming friends and couples for a romantic meal.”
