FIFTY years of friendship were celebrated in Canon Pyon last week.

The St. Lawrence Friendship Club was launched in 1965 when the Women’s Institute decided to put on a party for the elderly people of the local parishes.

The party provided inspiration for the future club and the British Red Cross was enlisted to help form what was to be named Canon Pyon and District British Red Cross Over Sixties Club.

Around 15 years ago the British Red Cross withdrew its support and the club was reformed under a new constitution and new name of the St Lawrence Friendship Club.

Today, it is affiliated to Canon Pyon St. Lawrence Church, meets monthly and has 45 members.

A special anniversary event was held at Canon Pyon Parish Hall last Thursday when members celebrated with food, wine and a cake.
