ONE Hereford bride really turned heads when she celebrated her big day by eating out – in McDonalds.

Antoinette Sullivan was beautifully turned out in a white backless dress and looked like the most traditional of any newly-wed.

But Mrs Sullivan, nee Cheriton, admits she hardly fits to most conventions.

The quarter pounder and chips followed a secretive – and surprise – wedding ceremony in front of a few select guests at Hereford Town Hall last Friday.

Her husband Miles, 23, skipped the trip to McDonalds to go paintballing with friends, many of whom were completely unaware that their mate had just tied the knot.

“We had told a lot of people to come to an ‘engagement party’ that evening which was actually our wedding party,” explained Mrs Sullivan.

“But we wanted the main ceremony to be more secretive in front of just a few people, mainly kids.

“After the ceremony we went over the road to the Barrels and then, because I was completely starving by that point, I took the kids to McDonalds.”

Due to the secrecy of the wedding, Mr Sullivan – who works for Central Roofing – missed out on a stag do, and that is why he ended up away from the fast-food joint and shooting paint at AJ Activities in Much Dewchurch.

The Sullivans, who have four children and live in Tupsley, Hereford, had invited a larger number of friends to a celebration – pitched as an engagement party – above the Imperial pub on the Friday evening.

This then turned out to be the official wedding party and, although there were a few surprised faces, the guests could only convey their happiness to the couple.

“A few people were saying that they felt bad as they had only bought us a small gift or just a card,” said Mrs Sullivan.

“But the whole money thing was one of the reasons we didn’t want to get married the traditional way.

“People spend way too much on weddings and there was no way I wanted to spend an obscene amount on something like this.

“If it wasn’t for the kids, we would have just ran away and dragged a stranger in off the street to act as a witness.”

Mrs Sullivan, who is studying spa management, added: “We just wanted to do it in our own way and for ourselves. We are not traditionalists.”

The 28-year-old treated herself to some Mozzarella sticks in McDonalds in addition to the burger, explaining that she was pleased to finally eat some greasy food having dieted before the big day in order to fit into her £50 dress.

And she was more than happy to buy her children a meal as a reward for keeping tight-lipped over their mum and dad's secret plans.

The spontaneous nature of the wedding day continued into the honeymoon.

Having driven 120 miles to their chosen destination of Tenby in Wales, the newly-weds grew bored of their quiet surrounds.

So they jumped back in the car and made their way another 240 miles to Staffordshire for a more lively day at Alton Towers.
