Guided Walking Tours in Historic Hereford

An introduction to this ancient border city, lasting between an hour and 90 minutes. Hereford’s position in the much disputed borderland between England and Wales made it strategically important to the Saxons, the Normans and their successors.

Today, 11.30pm, meet at the Elgar statue in the Cathedral Close.

Music and Goskontsert

Michael Bourdeaux, a Russian scholar and amateur musician, spent the academic year 1959–60 as an exchange student in Moscow. He went to concerts and the Bolshoi two or three times a week, becoming acutely aware of the iron fist with which the communist state controlled both the repertoire and the performers, punishing those who stepped out of line. On one memorable occasion he interpreted for Shostakovich, and later sang with Galina Vishnevskaya when she was finally permitted to perform in Britten’s War Requiem, having initially been banned from travelling outside Russia. This talk will include musical examples.

Today, 11am Left Bank Coach House, Hereford.

Poetry Reading

On this last day of the festival, poet- in-residence Allen Fisher will read his poems inspired by a range of concerts and events during the Three Choirs Festival.
