CALLOUS thieves have left children “devastated” after stealing heating oil, copper piping and roof lead from a youth group’s premises.

Abberley and Witley Scouts and Guides, which are based in a converted church in Great Witley near Stourport, now face a bill of around £5,000 to re-fill oil containers, fix the leaking roof and install improved security measures including cameras and fencing.

If the money cannot be raised within two months 107 five to 14-year-olds who regularly attend the centre will miss out on the recreational and educational activities provided by the group.

Mark Edwards, chairman of the organisation’s fundraising committee, said: “Parents are feeling angry and anxious and the children are devastated.

“It is very annoying. The thieves have vandalised and stolen from our centre and are stopping our children from playing in a safe area.

“We have fundraised over the years to buy and maintain the building and our leaders provide the scouts and guides with an amazing amount of fun and learning.

“We potentially won’t be able to use the building when winter and cold weather arrives which would be terrible.

“The amount of money to raise is daunting because we have never collected so much so quickly before and we need the money to ensure the premises are dry and heated so activities can continue.”

West Mercia Police, which was informed of the incident on September 2, confirmed lead flashing sized 16ft by 8ft and three metres of copper piping was taken, but no arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing.

Mr Edwards added that insurance will only pay out for 50 per cent of repair costs and therefore the group has embarked on a rescue plan for the site.

A jumble sale has been quickly organised to help boost the coffers and will take place at the scout building opposite Great Witley Surgery, Worcester Road, on Saturday (September 27) at 2pm.

“The local community has responded brilliantly to our appeal by donating personal possessions but more contributions are welcome”, added Mr Edwards.

“We also need bargain hunters to turn up and there will certainly be a chance to grab some great items such as Nintendo games and designer Boden clothing.”
