VIOLENT crime, anti-social behaviour and speeding traffic are “very big” problems in Bewdley according to the town’s council.

The local authority has responded to the West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner Town and Parish Council Survey and its submission reveals a range of councillor concerns.

Street drinking, people using drugs and vehicle crime have been classified as “fairly big” problems, while drug dealing and anti-social behaviour have been singled out as the biggest issues in the town.

Mayor of Bewdley, Derek Killingworth said: “We have got to keep fighting to stop these crimes and work to keep the public of Bewdley and visitors to the town safe 24 hours a day.

“There is a problem with anti-social behaviour which is to a large extent alcohol fuelled and sadly drug issues still carry on.

“We definitely need more of a police presence in Bewdley and the town council and I will work closely with police officials to improve matters.

“Speeding vehicles are also a big concern. We have a duty to protect people and to reduce speed so that is why we are campaigning for a 20mph limit.”

The town council, which agreed its response to the survey at a meeting on Monday, September 1, classified vandalism, domestic burglary, youth crime, crimes against businesses and race or hate crimes as “not a very big problem”.

It also stated “there is still a lack of visible policing at many key times of day and night” and “strongly disagreed” that the “community has confidence in the safer neighbourhood team”.

Mr Killingworth added: “Sadly the police have faced significant funding cuts and I think it is disgraceful when peoples’ lives are put at risk because of money.”
