UP to 110 homes are to be built near a Hereford school.

Gladman Developments was today given permission for the homes to go up on land near the Bishop of Hereford’s Bluecoat School.

Councillors heard about ongoing traffic concerns along Hampton Dene Road and how an increase in vehicles could add to the problems.

But Councillor Jim Kenyon, ward member for Tupsley, said the new homes would improve the situation.

Gladman had initially wanted to build 120 homes.

That application came before the council’s planning committee in April, but no decision was made within the council’s 13-week deadline.

The firm therefore appealed on ‘non-determination’ grounds.

That appeal is due to be heard in September.

Speaking after the meeting, Cllr Marcelle Lloyd-Hayes said: "I supported the application as it affects Tupsley more than residents of Hampton Bishop.

"Much as I would prefer to see smaller housing developments, this application brings significant benefit to local people wanting to buy or rent in or close to the city .

"It also enables significant road improvements  such as removing the unpopular "sleeping policemen " in the Hampton Dene area.

"On a personal note I would like to see the traffic lights removed from the busy Church Road/Folly Lane junction and a roundabout installed.

"This would avoid the constant damage to the lights, discourage rat running in the area and traffic would move freely thus reducing the constant queuing and congestion in Tupsley.

"In addition I received no formal objections and only seven objections were received by the planning department.

"No petitions were received and the developers will contribute nearly £600,000 to support the local community and education.

"I was pleased that members of the planning  committee discussing the outline planning permission expressed the need for prestigious housing design as "bog standard" design would not be welcome"
