CHURCH GIFT DAY - More than £1,900 was donated to St Edward’s church, Knighton during its annual gift day. The church is still trying to raise enough money to get a new heating system. This money donated on gift day will go towards the heating funds and other essential needs of the church. Some of the money from last year’s gift day went towards improvements being made to the entrance to the church and churchyard.

COFFEE MORNING FOR NICK - A coffee morning was held at Norton Street Baptist church in Knighton to raise money for Nick Drury, who is a great-nephew of Knighton church member Hazel Peacock and as a child came to Knighton regularly in the school holidays. A total of £220 was raised at the coffee morning this will go to Nick to help fund his trip. Nick began training at the Baptist Missionary Society in Selly Oak, Birmingham on the September 5 to prepare him for his six-month visit to India. The coffee morning was held on September 19 – the same day that Nick celebrated his 21st birthday. His grandparents John and Jean Drury, who were at the event, said: “Nick wanted to attend the event in Knighton but was on a four-day bonding session in north Wales”.

On October 9 Nick will fly to Kalkata and will be there till March 2014. When he is there he will be working with street and slum children, leading Sunday school, helping teach English in schools and helping at the Mother Teresa Foundation.

GREEN FLAG AWARD - Knighton Town Forum has won a Keep Wales Tidy, Green Flag award for the fourth year running for the area behind the Offa’s Dyke Centre in Knighton known as Pinner’s Hole. Knighton is the only town in Radnorshire to win the award this year and there is only one other winner in the whole of Powys. The other winner is the Llanidloes Millennium Garden. The Green Flag Award recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces in the country as well as driving up the quality of green space.

Knighton Town Forum is responsible for maintaining the area. The Green Flag award was presented to Councillor Roger Bright, mayor of Knighton and chairman of the town forum, and Coun John Brunt, chairman of Powys County Council and forum member by Mrs Lynne Brunt.
