Hereford Times: Clive Roads Royal Three Counties Show

Clive Roads

Clive was born in Warwickshire and spent his formative years growing up on and enjoying farm life. Both his parents coming from strong farming backgrounds, his father originating from Buckinghamshire and his mother (a Law) from a well-known Herefordshire farming family.

Having been educated at Warwick he left school and became a trainee Auctioneer with Leamington Spa based pedigree Livestock Auctioneers John Thornborrow & Co who conducted, in the main, sales of pedigree cattle at a particularly exciting time in the beef industry during the 1970’s when the now established continental breeds were being imported into the UK. Sales were conducted for breed societies and individual breeders across the UK mainland. Valuable experience and knowledge was gained throughout his 11 years there including studying at night for his exams and also becoming secretary of the Shropshire Sheep Breeders Association and the Longhorn Cattle Society.

A move from Warwickshire was prompted in 1983 when he married and moved to Worcestershire. At the same time McCartneys took over the running of Worcester Livestock Market situated as it was in the centre of the city. A position was available for an Auctioneer to have responsibility for the day to day running of the market which he clasped with both hands. In 1999 the market moved to its current site adjacent to the M5 motorway with all the advantages of efficient logistics and facilities. Not only has his presence at Worcester seen the market grow with commercial stock but several National Sales are conducted for pedigree cattle and sheep breed societies, Clive remains official Auctioneer for 7 cattle and 12 sheep breed societies.

Clive is Chairman of McCartneys, who operate 5 livestock centres, 13 estate agency offices, 2 sale rooms, 2 planning/survey centres and offers full and comprehensive rural professional expertise. He is currently a Monitor Valuer for the Welsh Government to oversee TB Valuations throughout Wales. In 2019 Clive received a “Lifetime Achievement Award” as part of the Livestock Market Awards within Farmers Guardian “British Farming Awards”

Over the years he has been privileged to judge cattle and sheep classes at most County Shows, judging at the Royal Welsh and the Royal Show on three occasions.
Other connections with the livestock sector include Chairing the NBA Beef Expo committee at the Three Counties Showground Malvern and he is also Chairman of Council of the Three Counties Agricultural Society.

His “good looks” have been moulded by a rugby career that took him to County level at Warwickshire and he dines out on the fact that he was “the best back row forward never to play for England” (as quoted by an ex England International)!

Apart from his involvement in country sports, Clive is keen on genealogy with a family tree tracing back to 1532 – in his words “plenty of history but not much money”
