Skipper Pugh stars in goal as Westfields gain point

Rocester 1 Westfields 1.

SKIPPER Jon Pugh made three superb saves and Rocester twice rattled the woodwork in this Aspire Midland Alliance clash.

A 20-yard free-kick from Phil Glover seven minutes after the interval helped Westfields to a hard-fought point.

Lee Mussell, Tom Sparey and Paul Casey also won plaudits in a brave second-half defensive display from Westfields.

Westfields opened up well and Daryl Addis tucked the ball away but his effort was ruled off side.

Mark Hibbard and Glover also tested the Rocester goalkeeper Richard Froggatt in the early stages.

The north Staffordshire outfit went ahead in the 25th minute after Shane Reaney collected a long clearance and scored a fine individual goal.

Rocester pressed after the interval and Reaney was foiled by Pugh who held on to a stinging drive.

Westfields equalised in the 52nd minute when full-back Sam Harrison was fouled 20 yards from goal. Glover drilled the free-kick low into the bottom corner.

The goal stirred Rocester and James Curley rattled the Westfields’ post from 18 yards and then Reaney’s header hit the bar.

With 10 minutes left, Pugh saved at the feet of Curley before Harrison cleared the danger.

Tipton Town 2 Westfields 3.

SCOTT Jackson was red-carded for an off-the-ball incident as Westfields reached the quarter-finals of the Midland Alliance League Cup.

Westfields played for an hour with 10 men when substitute Jackson was dismissed after clashing with Tipton striker Nathan Jones.

Chris Morris put Tipton ahead in the fifth minute before Westfields hit back in the 43rd minute with a debut goal from 18-year-old Jaron MacCauley.

Tipton restored their advantage through Nathan Jones but Daryl Addis hauled Westfields level and then Glover hit the winner in the 88th minute.

l On Saturday, Westfields will travel to Loughborough University seeking to continue their climb in the Midland Alliance table.
