TWO goals from new arrival Saul Halpin helped Westfields to a morale-boosting win over Midland Alliance leaders Tividale.

After the disappointment of their last-gasp defeat in their Midland Alliance Cup semi-final against Quorn the previous Tuesday night, Westfields were looking for a good start against their high-flying visitors.

But it was Tividale who struck first when Zack Foster's cross was diverted into the net by Karl Edwards.

Westfields gradually got a foothold in the game and were on level terms when Jamie Cuss squared to Halpin to slide the ball into the back of the net.

After a scrappy start to the second period, when neither side was able to gain control, Westfields finally seized their chance to go ahead.

Twenty-two-year-old Halpin, who made eight Football League appearances for Torquay United including one against Hereford United in February 2011, showed neat skill to cut in from the right before firing home at the near post.

Tividale, who had lost on only two previous occasions this season, tried hard to battle back only to find central defenders Phil Glover and Dene Whittall-Williams in fine form.

And it was Westfields who went close to scoring again late on when Halpin lifted a chance over the keeper, but also over the bar, in the final minute.
