WESTFIELDS were forced to settle for a draw in a six-goal thriller against relegation candidates Gornal Athletic on Saturday.

In a breathless five-goal first-half Fields twice took the lead, before a sloppy goal after the break cost them the three points.

Craig Jones opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, picking up a quick free-kick and driving forward before unleashing a low shot from outside the box.

Fields doubled their lead minutes later when Phil Harris picked out Jamie Insall with a pinpoint cross from the right, and the striker fired in from close range.

Gornal, who have claimed 10 of their 13 points on the road, hit back, with Ravi Sanga pouncing on a failed clearance to drive the ball low past Matt Gwynne.

Richard Smith levelled for the visitors after the Westfields defence failed to cut out a cross from the right.

However, rounding off an action-packed first 45 at allpay.park, defender Bobby Aldrich found himself in the right place at the right time, tapping in to give Fields a halftime lead.

The second stanza picked up where the first-half left off, Smith getting his second straight from the restart, as Westfields defenders were left appealing for offside.

Both sides had chances to win it; Insall came close to bagging his second, before Aldrich was called into action at the other end, clearing off his own line.

Next Week Sean Edwards’ side travel to second-placed Tividale, unbeaten at home this year, and play a HFA County Senior Challenge Cup Quarter Final on Tuesday night against Ewyas Harold.
