Dunkirk 1 Westfields 3

WESTFIELDS recorded a superb 3-1 Midland Alliance away win at Nottingham as some inspired substitutions by boss Sean Edwards paid off in fine style.

Two of the replacements, Craig Jones and Dene Whittal-Williams were on target while the third substitute, teenager Luke Griffiths, gave another impressive performance as Westfields went on the rampage in the second period.

Although Brad Birch and Jamie Insall had early opportunities, the allpay.park club were trailing 1-0 at the break when Dunkirk took a 40th minute lead when a right-wing move finished with Will Coutts blasting a 20 yard shot past Matt Gwynne.

And it was only some fine keeping by Gwynne, who saved point-blank from Zico Grinion, and good defensive work by Bobby Aldrich, who cleared a Richardo Reid shot off the line, that kept the Dunkirk lead at one goal.

After the break Westfields looked a different side and equalised early in the second half when Zac Sirrell and Alex O’Leary combined for Birch to stab home the equaliser.

Edwards then reshuffled the team and the move paid off when Phil Harris fed Craig Jones who fired into the bottom corner with 20 minutes remaining.

Gwynne twice saved well from long-range efforts and Aldrich had to pull off a couple of saving tackles but Westfields made the points safe four minutes from the end.

Harris sent O’Leary away down the left to win a corner and the midfielder delivered the cross for Whittal-Williams to head home at the near post .

Westfields return to FA Vase action on Saturday when they entertain their old Midland Alliance rivals Coventry Sphinx in a second-round tie.

Fields progressed to this stage of the competition with a thrilling 3-2 success against Bromsgrove Sporting in the previous round.
