WESTFIELDS put up a strong showing against Worcester City as they put the finishing touches to their pre-season campaign.

With their Midland Alliance season getting under way on Saturday, Sean Edwards’ side gave their visitors a run for their money in last weekend’s 1-1 draw at allpay.park.

Trialist Aaron Williams strengthened his claim for a deal at Worcester City by putting his side ahead 20 minutes after the break before Zac Sirrell levelled nine minutes later.

Westfields also had chances to win the match but keeper Matt Sargeant saved from substitute Dene Whittal-Williams, while Aidan Thomas was off target on a couple of occasions.

The hosts more than matched their Conference North rivals, who had just four players who have committed for next season on show - Tom Thorley, Danny Glover, Shabir Khan and Sam Smith.

Of those, Smith lasted just 10 minutes because of a knee injury, although during that time he did manage to pick up a yellow card for hauling back Aidan Thomas.

Chances were sparse for both sides in the first-half, Craig Jones going close with a free-kick for the hosts and Shabir heading over from a corner at the other end.

Former Northampton Town youth keeper Dean Snedker was among those hoping to earn City contracts and he demonstrated assured handling as the ball grew increasingly slippy in the rain.

He also produced a good save to deny Phil Glover with the first meaningful opportunity of the second-half, seconds before Will Loughman dragged a shot inches wide.

Trialist midfielder Elliot Turner, last with Shrewsbury Town, showed glimpses of his potential with a neat run down the centre before lofting the ball over the top.

Worcester, though, opened the scoring after 65 minutes, Danny Glover whipping over a cross from the right and Williams stooping to head home.

Sub Danny Williams also fired wide moments later after he had taken Glover’s through ball in his stride and rounded keeper Matt Gwynne.

The equaliser came when Sargeant, seconds after coming on for Snedker, failed to hold a shot from Mark Hibbard and fellow sub Sirrell slotted in the rebound.

It was Westfields, however, who looked more likely to win it late on and it needed Sargeant to parry a strike from sub Whittal-Williams.

Westfields: Gwynne, Aldrich, Giglio, Glover, G Thomas, Robbins, Jones, Loughman, Hunt, A Thomas, O’Leary. Subs: Morgan, Whittal-Williams, Hibbard, Sirrell, Palmer, Jackman, Birch, Dale, Pugh (GK).
