WESTFIELDS gave their pre-season a boost with a deserved Herefordshire Senior Cup win over their more illustrious neighbours at allpay.park on Monday.

With Hereford disappointingly opting to field a very young and inexperienced side for the HFA's showpiece event, Westfields were always in control of the game and, with better finishing and greater good fortune, would have achieved a much greater winning margin.

The home side took just three minutes to open the scoring.

Former Bull Sam Gwynne, an impressive performer in the Westfields midfield, slipped a pass through to Carl Morgan whose cross was neatly headed home at the far post by Jamie Cuss.

United were back on level terms within two minutes, though, when Yoann Arquin headed in a deep cross from the right.

Arquin, who looks a fine prospect, carved open the Fields defence with a couple of powerful runs which his colleagues were unable to finish off before Fields regained the lead on 29 minutes.

Gwynne was once again involved, surging into the area and evading a wild challenge from Tom John before crossing for another United old-boy, Craig Jones, to score from close range.

Hereford were back level inside a minute, however, when Arquin showed a deft touch as he surged on to a good pass from Tyler Weir, rounded keeper Jamie Moore and slid home his second.

Cuss headed an Anthony Robbins cross against the bar three minutes before the break and Jones also thundered a shot against the woodwork early in the second period.

United keeper Dale Brook then twice saved well from Jones before, seven minutes from time, the United defence opened up for Sam Harrison to strike home the winner.
