WESTFIELDS boss Sean Edwards doesn’t want to be the bridesmaid in Monday’s HFA County Challenge Cup final at Edgar Street (11am kick off).

The Midland Alliance outfit face Herefordshire rivals Wellington and have suffered painful defeats in the past two finals.

Edwards is expecting to be without marksman Richard Kear for the showpiece clash.

“Richard is getting married on Saturday - the day of the Rocester game - and I am not sure whether he’s going to be away for the cup final,” said Edwards.

“Hopefully, he will be playing because he’s scored a lot of goals for us and he gets in the right places.

“All the lads have been invited to Richard’s wedding reception in Ross so we’re going to look forward to that.”

Westfields have won nine County Cup finals – one fewer than Kington Town and Hinton.

Ledbury Town shocked Westfields last season when goals from David Accam, Lee Allen and Antoine Thompson gave them a 3-0 win.

“We were soundly beaten by Ledbury last year,” said Edwards, who admits his prioriy this season is a top-four spot in the league.

“Ledbury brought in a few players for the final and deserved to win the game.

“I've seen Wellington a couple of times and they're a good, young side and, on any given day, they can beat anyone.

“It’s going to be a tough match and I think it’s going to be a 1-0 or a 2-1. I can’t see many goals in it.”

Wellington ended their 40-year wait for the County Cup when they overcame Westfields on penalties in April 2009.

Matt Pugh’s penaltykick gave the villagers a 3-2 penalty shoot-out success after the match had finished 2-2 after extra time.

Wellington boss Derek Williams says his West Midlands League Premier Division squad have been struggling with injuries Craig Sewell (elbow) will be missing and Wayne McNeil has been out with a hamstring injury.

Williams’ son, Matt, and ex-Westfields defender Jamie Edwards are battling to overcome groin problems.

“We are looking forward to the final immensely but we’ve got to wait on the fitness of some key players,”

said Williams.

“Paul Jones is really looking forward to it because he’s never played at Edgar Street.”

Williams would love to repeat their triumph at Edgar Street two years ago.

“You start every season wanting to get to the County Cup final and we’re one victory away from winning it.

I think the pressure is all on Westfields,” he said.
