CENTRAL defender and skipper Phil Glover carried off the first-team player of the year award when Westfields held their 48th annual end-of-season dinner and presentation evening at Burghill Valley Golf Club.

Glover guided Westfields to their two impressive Cup wins, over Hereford United in pre-season in the HFA Senior Invitation Trophy and in the HFA County Senior Challenge Cup Final over Pegasus Juniors in April.

Reflecting on the season, manager Sean Edwards told the players, guests and officials: “The season is one of under-achievement in the MFA League.

"After two seasons of being runners-up we did not hit the ground running at the start of the season and never quite achieved the results we needed in the league.

"However, we won the two senior county cups and enjoyed a long run in the FA Vase. We will continue to strive to win the MFA and it’s a big challenge for players and management but promotion to the Southern League is our aim.

Chief Executive Andy Morris reminded everyone of how the club started in 1966 on the back of England winning the World Cup.

“It’s 48 years since we started as a group of young lads and how we have developed is incredible," he said.

"We now run 10 teams at Westfields and to coincide with the 2014 World Cup we have started Under 4/5/6 year old coaching sessions at allpay.park on a Saturday morning to bring a new generation of youngsters into the club.”

"The U18 team will next season play in the Midland Floodlit League while our Herefordshire Premier Division team will have a new management team as Anthony Rivett and Paul Martin have both stood down for family reasons following three seasons of success.

“Rivo and Paul Martin have done a great job in developing younger players for the club while at the same time giving football to those older players who are still wanting to play after they finish with the First Team.

"The new management team with physio Paul Boulton will want to carry on this ethos of the club.”
