MANAGER Sean Edwards has backed Westfields to win the Midland Alliance title - even if he’s not in the hot-seat next season.

Edwards says he’s taking his mind off football and hasn’t decided if he will continue at the helm.

The Hereford club held their awards evening at the Starlite Rooms last Friday - a day after their Southern League promotion hopes were crushed.

“I was so angry about us not being promoted that I emailed the FA on Friday afternoon to ask why,” said Edwards, whose men were runners-up in the Midland Alliance.

“There are certain leagues which can have two teams promoted but our league is only classed as a second tier league in step five.”

“It’s very complicated but the only way we can be assured promotion is to win the league.”

Westfields’ players are having a end-of-season trip to Newquay this weekend.

And Edwards will be the best man at the wedding of Pete Williams, a former Westfields Reserves’ manager.

“We played 65 games and I think we have got a young team capable of winning the Midland Alliance,” said Edwards.

“I haven’t decided what I am doing next season yet. It’s hard when you have a full-time job and are travelling all over the country.

“We’ve narrowly missed out promotion for two successive years and it’s hard to swallow. “The players are determined they can win the league.”

Westfields’ chief executive Andy Morris says Guildford City, Fleet Town, Godalming Town and Stratford Town have been promoted to Southern League South-West.

He has asked the FA to clarify why Westfields were not handed promotion. Chairman John Morgan presented a silver salver to club skipper Scott Jackson, who has given 10 years’ outstanding service to the first team.

At the club’s awards evening, Morris reflected on the club’s 28-game unbeaten league run and the runners-up spots in the league and league cup.

Westfields also retained the HFA County Challenge Cup and regained the Dennis Hartland Trophy.

Anthony Rivett and coach Paul Martin guided Westfields’ Reserves to the HFA Charity Bowl, HFL Journal Cup and HFL Senior League Shield.
