LEDBURY RFC progressed in the Counties 1 Championship Cup following a 23-5 victory over familiar opponents Camp Hill.Ledbury welcomed Camp Hill for the first of three matches that the sides will battle it out this season. Luke Clarke made an early run from deep until the home side gained a penalty which Jack Hughes deftly stroked over from in front of the posts (3-0) on 12 minutes. The home side struck again after an impressive piece of interplay through Will Lewis, Harry Harris and Iolo Bubb who finally linked with George Wallin on a great angle and he was in to make it (10-0) with his own conversion. And that was how it remained until the half-time whistle.Ledbury kicked off for the second half but were soon in trouble as another penalty and a yellow card for Archie Allcock for a tip tackle gave the visitors the chance to go over in the corner (10-5).From a swift restart, Josh Bishop came from deep and jiggled his way over in the corner and, with a stunning Jack Hughes conversion, equilibrium was regained (17-5) within the first ten minutes. The Camp Hill kick-off went straight out so scrum centre and exerting their impressive pack dominance Ledbury garnered another penalty. But the Camp Hill defence held off a number of probing Ledbury forays before receiving their own yellow card for a no hands, a crunching tackle which saw Ollie Smith on for the now injured, recently returned, Archie Allcock.Ledbury eventually benefitted from another penalty as Hughes launched a trademark long-range kick to make it (20-5).Camp Hill started to leak penalties, including being marched back an extra 10 metres, until Hughes claimed another three points (23-5).There could have been more as Ledbury gained yet another penalty but it was reversed for dissent as the final whistle beckoned.Ledbury were commended for their team effort with some smart moves emerging along with strong grit and determination on all fronts, which put paid to the woes of the results from the previous two weeks, particularly as this was against an arguably much stronger opposition.Next Saturday sees a day off before Ledbury firsts travel with some justifiably renewed confidence to play Worcester in the league with an early kick off at noon

LUCTONIANS produced an impressive second half performance and scored 21 points without reply as they beat Old Redcliffians 35-7.Lucs opened the scoring after seven minutes when George Bennet stole away to score following good work by the excellent home No9 Owen Randell, Tom Jones with the first of his conversions from a difficult angle. The home side were further in front when Jack Goodwin scrambled over from a driving maul close in to dot down, Jones again converting the extras (14-0).But Old Reds were not to be outdone and remained committed to their cause when the busy Austin Tovey managed to pounce on a loose ball from again a close in driving maul in Lucs territory to reduce the scoreline to 14-7, Ashley Groves converting, it was to be their only success in the match. The rain came and made ball handling difficult, and both sides suffered from knock-on ball and unfortunate penalties, but neither would add to their score before oranges. The second half became a kicking game, with Tom Jones kicking excellently from hand, gaining the home side several line-outs deep in Old Reds territory after kicking 50/22 ball.It was from one of his efforts Lucs increased their lead when Jack Goodwin dived over for his second try from close in, Jones edging the home side further ahead 21-7.Another Jones deft kick once again saw the home side in Old Reds red zone and this time the alert James Mear crept off the back of the maul to dot down, Jones again kicking for a 28-7 lead on the hour mark.Old Reds manfully worked their way down field on a couple of occasions, but never really troubled an excellent Lucs defensive line.Owen Randell rounded off his excellent performance when his chase from a George Bennett kick through on halfway, bounced favourably over the try line for him to grab and dot down in the last five minutes, Jones again immaculate from the tee.Lucs head coach George Thomas said after the match that he was ‘very pleased’ with the result, he added: “Despite the atrocious conditions the boys stuck to the game management plan, the impact of our bench was excellent and made a big difference, against what is a very useful Old Red’s side”Lucs travel to Exeter Uni next Saturday looking to keep their winning theme going and keep pace with the early league leaders.

Hereford RFC left ‘disappointed’ by lack of cutting edge

HEREFORD head coach Dean Powell was left ‘disappointed’ with his side’s efficiency in front of the try-line as they fell to a 8-13 defeat at home to Silhillians.A converted Tom Williams try and Ryan Whitnall penalty was felt inadequate for his side’s 80 minutes of play.Powell said: “Silhillians won the toss and chose to play up the slope and against the wind so we knew that in the first half we needed to score points.“Our red-zone efficiency was pretty poor, we went into the Silhillians’ 22 seven or eight times in the first half and came away with just five points.“This was part of the reason we lost the game, we were not clinical in making the right decisions and taking the points. We need to execute better from the set-pieces and in our back play.“We created many more chances in the second half, but again we couldn’t convert through silly decision making and mistakes due to the wet conditions.“We have lots to work on, first to improve our performance and then to get back onto a winning path. We need to put things right on the training paddock.”Hereford kicked off playing down the slope and for long periods kept the Silhillians penned in their own half. After 17 minutes, the Wyesiders won a lineout deep in the Silhillians’ 22, the catch and drive made ground and Williams drove over in the corner to give Hereford a five-point lead. The angle was difficult and Whitnall, making his first team debut, was only just wide with his conversion attempt.Silhillians responded and after 32 minutes scored a similar try of their own. This time the conversion was successful, giving the visitors a 5-7 lead which they held until the interval.Early in the second half a Silhillians player was shown a yellow card and spent 10 minutes in the sin-bin, Hereford restored a narrow lead with a Whitnall penalty taking the score to 8-7.Hereford spent long periods in the visitors’ half, punctuated by Silhillian break outs, often as a result of the Hereford penalty count.During these Silhillian break outs the visitors were able to draw level and then take the lead with a brace of penalty goals. All game, but in the second half in particular, Hereford suffered from poor decisions and execution and rued another lost game, which they had more than enough chances to win.The 1870s played a friendly against Malvern and won a good match by 33-12. The Hereford tries were scored by Harry Daw, Zak Bonfield, Rhys Proctor, Neil Clark and Alex Thomson. Conversions were made by Ben Woodx3 and Sam Roberts. There are no fixtures for the league teams next weekend, but on Friday evening the Lions have their first fixture of the season against FUBARS under the lights at Wyeside and will welcome any spectators who enjoy watching a bit of good rugby.

LUCTONIANS skipper Ben Link scored a hat-trick of tries as his side bounced back from their opening day defeat with a 34-50 victory against Syston.Lucs were on the score board after only two minutes when from their first attack a driving maul deep in Syston red zone saw Link over to score with Tom Jones converting for an early 0-7 lead. And it was double the tally just three minutes later Jack Goodwin was also driven over almost un-apposed, Jones converting and a lead of 0-14.Syston scored a try in response, and the points kept coming in rapid time as Caleb Montgomery was also over for Lucs to dot down only two minutes later, Jones again converting for 5-21 lead. The game was further enhanced when Link again was at the back of another driving maul from close in and after only 20 minutes Lucs led 5-26 and looked like running away with the game. However, Syston would not lie down and on their only second foray into Lucs territory fullback Green was over the whitewash (10-26).Syston then used a penalty advantage to score a converted try and were 17-26 behind at half-time.The home side came back out all guns blazing and Owien Harriot-Davis was yellow carded almost from the re-start for Lucs.Syston took full advantage and scored a converted try to draw back to 24-26.The home side then had some control and Green kicked a penalty for a high tackle and led 27-26 on the hour. However, an immediate response saw Frank Kelly break through a couple of tackles to put the ball in the grasp of James Wheeler to run in from the 20 under the posts, Jones again added the extras for a 27-33 scoreline. And then mayhem ruled as Lucs ran away in the last 10 minutes adding 17 points to secure the points in what was a spectacle for the neutral.Jones knocked over a penalty from the 22 following, Priestly-Nangle seeing yellow for Syston.Link was again at the bottom of another close in line out maul to increase the scoreline to 27-43 before Syston gained a consolation try. However, from the restart there was still time for Goodwin to round off the game after running through and touching down under the posts, Jones rounding off the scoreline at 34-50.

Ledbury made to pay for penalty county in narrow defeat

LEDBURY were made to pay for a high penalty count as they succumbed to a narrow 21-22 home defeat against Earlsdon. The hosts arguably only had themselves to blame with an unacceptable penalty count of 23 despite edging most of the contest.Within five minutes of the start, Earlsdon were in front with a long-range penalty kick in off the post, before scoring another penalty shortly afterwards to make it 0-6 on 15 minutes.Earlsdon were not squeaky clean either on the penalty front as from a pick and go Blessing Mwaisoloka made good ground before Josh Hill was in under the posts with Iolo Bubb converting (7-6). For their efforts in a questionable defence, Earlsdon received their first yellow card.Earlsdon benefitted from a further Ledbury penalty inside their 22 to allow their very much on form no 12 kicker to make it (7-9) on 30 minutes.Ledbury retaliated with quick ball down the line to see John Parker in under the posts again, with Iolo Bubb extras, (14-9).Following a thwarted drop goal attempt, Earlsdon slotted another penalty (14-12) as the half time whistle beckoned.A failed penalty kick for another Ledbury high tackle eventually saw the visiting winger gather the 22 dropout and tear down the touchline, to score in the corner (14-17).Ledbury stuttered as Hill received a yellow or a deliberate knock on before firm pressure on the Earlsdon line elicited a penalty try and another yellow for Earlsdon (21-17).Ledbury attempted to hold their lead, but conceded more penalties and were marched back an extra 10m on one, not for the first time and another penalty gave them ample opportunity to pierce the line out wide once more (21-22).Next Saturday sees Camp Hill coming to Ross Road.

Hereford RFC regret errors in narrow defeat to Edwardians

HEREFORD RFC head coach Dean Powell was left reflecting on ‘silly errors’ as his side suffered a narrow 26-24 defeat at Edwardians.Hereford were unlucky to end up losing narrowly, but had the consolation of two bonus points.Powell said: “If we didn’t make so many silly errors, like knock ons and missing touch from penalty kicks, we would have won the game.“Those are the things we need to get better, silly basic errors, if we can get those right against Silhillians next week we can’t go far wrong.“Man of the Match was Stephan Dyers with two tries and some amazing cover tackles. All in all, I’m very pleased with the result, with three minutes to go and down 26-19 I would have taken that, after all we have had little success recently over Edwardians.“Our backs played some really enterprising rugby and scored two of our four tries from our own line. It’s a pity we came up short in the end, but can take pleasure in the two bonus points.”Hereford started well but a silly error at the back of a lineout gifted Edwardians a scrum, their number eight picked up and ran through some pretty sloppy tackles to score. The conversion gave the hosts a seven-point lead which they held until half time.Edwardians opened the second half with a nice three-quarter try, the ball going through good hands to score in the corner, increasing their lead to 12 points. The Wyesiders then stepped up a gear and some good play in mid-field led to the ball moving wide to Steph Dyers, who with pace and good footwork sliced through the Edwardians defence for the first Hereford try. Josh Wright added the conversion to reduce the arrears to five points.A chip ahead from Wright was gathered by Harry Sockett coming through at pace and some inter-play with Dyers and Sockett saw Wright touch down in the corner. Wright’s conversion gave Hereford the lead by 12-14.However, the lead was short-lived as three minutes later Edwardians replied with a converted try, 19-14.Dyers put in a long kick ahead which he followed up, recovered and put Ewan Duncan over for the third try. The conversion attempt was wide, but the score was level 19-19.With minutes to go, Joe Vaugan had a yellow card for a deliberate knock on. Edwardians got into their visitors 22 again, they moved the ball wide to their very good centre who scored and the conversion took the score to 26-19.Well into injury time Hereford were awarded a penalty, the Wyesiders kicked to the corner and from the driving lineout the ball was moved along the line to Dyers who scored a fourth and bonus try. The final score was 26 – 24 and Hereford also took a losing bonus point. The 1870s had a good 55-26 win over Evesham II, tries were scored by Ben Gillett x2, Ben Hyde, Sam Johnson, Jamie Hodges, Sam Roberts, Rupeni Viseinavanua, Harrison Jones and Alfie Skyrme. Ryan Whitnall made seven conversions.Next week HRFC welcome Silhillians to Wyeside kick off 3pm and a 2/3XV entertain Malvern in a friendly.
