Bury 1
Hereford United 0
WAYNE Brown was in typical ‘Superman’ form as the high-flying Shakers held on to complete a double over Hereford.
Brown had an easy first half as United failed to build on impressive build-up play after falling behind in the early stages.
But he had to show his brilliant best to twice deny Leon Constantine in the last 20 minutes.
“I think the defeat was a bit tough on Hereford. They knocked the ball about and played really well,” said Brown. “They had quite a bit of possession, too and missed some good chances.
“We found it very tough today but we stayed professional and got the result we needed.
“For the first hour, all I had to deal with, really, was crosses and I felt quite comfortable coming for them.
“I was quite surprised that they kept attacking me in the air and they were quite easy balls to deal with.”
Bury took the lead after Hereford had been pulled up for an innocuous-looking challenge a yard outside the area.
Michael Jones stepped up to curl a shot beyond keeper Adam Bartlett and into the top corner of the net.
It was a virtual replay of the manner in which Jones had opened the scoring in the clash between the sides at Edgar Street, which Bury won 3-1.
Ryan Lowe came close to adding a second four minutes before the break when he forced a flying save from Bartlett.
And a brilliant goalline clearance on 54 minutes saw Sam Gwynne get back to clear after Ryan Lowe’s shot squirmed under Bartlett’s body.
Constantine then looked as if he had levelled with a fierce shot from Pugh’s header only for Brown finally to enter the action with a fine reaction parry with his legs.
The former Bulls keeper excelled himself again three minutes from the end with an acrobatic save from Constantine after Manset’s flick.
“Leon Constantine should really have finished the first one, from six yards out,” said Brown.
“I just stuck my leg out and stopped it – that’s what I’m paid to do, I suppose.
“The second one was a bit of a ‘camera-save’,” he laughed. “I quite enjoy those.”
Brown, who has failed to become the cult hero at Gigg Lane that he was at Edgar Street despite some brilliant displays, produced these saves in front of the sparse Bulls following.
And he acknowledged the warmth of the welcome they had given him.
“The Hereford fans gave me a good reception – they were brilliant,” he said.
And Brown had some words of encouragement for the Bulls fans who should not be despairing yet, he felt.
“Hereford have certainly got something there, they just need someone to help Leon Constantine up front,” he said.
“It is a shame what has happened at Hereford – for four or five years it was brilliant but the last couple have not really gone according to plan.
“But they were probably one of the best teams that we have played here this season.”
