Luke Graham's Blog - Grimsby freeze and early Christmas trees.
2:06pm Friday 7th September 2012 in Blue Square Bet Conference Premier - Table
WELL, Saturday’s game was a poor showing.
We started well for 20 minutes and then just slowly faded away. It was disappointing and we had a lot to think about afterwards.
A lot has been said of the slope on the pitch and that the tradition was to attack the Meadow End in the second half.
I can see the logic with the hard-core supporters willing us on, yet the stats of five home wins in the last two seasons told me different.
Every game bar Grimsby, I have won the toss before kick-off and sent us attacking left to right (Meadow End) in the first half. We seem to start like a house on fire and get the first goal and momentum going.
Yet our second-half showings have seen us hanging on for dear life in front of the Meadow End. If we can improve in the second half and learn how to win more efficiently, we can really challenge for the top five.
I won’t be changing the strategy as we have won three home games out of four. So keep supporting us in that second half and be our 12th man out there!
On Monday, I had a long chat with our youth team coach John Layton. He informed me of the first u18s win of the season against Yeovil at the weekend, which is already an improvement on last season!
John has been backed with more resources this year to form a proper youth set-up. He had a difficult time last year with a variety of things, yet stuck at it and now is seeing the rewards.
Marley Watkins and Ryan Bowman’s diaries resumed this week with the latest squabbling over…..washing-up liquid! They find it hard to share things so tend to buy separately!
Marley is adamant Ryan used his liquid instead of his own and is very upset by the episode. It’s thought that special labels will be put on the liquids to stop this from happening again!
I was so pumped up for the Woking game along with the rest of the squad. I could see we were all desperate to put Saturday behind us and there is a good belief in the camp.
Two great strikes by Ash Sammons and Sam Clucas put us in a commanding lead. I was pleased for the pair of them, for both it was their first goal in professional football and for Hereford. Both are just 21 years old!
I was especially delighted for Sam, who I think has been a real find this season along with a lot of the younger players. His work-rate cannot be under estimated, he made that goal himself and the composure to finish it was to be admired.
We made the finish to the game hard for ourselves with bad decisions, yet we saw it out which pleased me. We will keep learning as a group of players.
The banter was in full flow this week among the lads. A new-found game was brought to the table by Mr Townsend. Using a black marker pen, you had, without looking, to draw a line on the whiteboard around four badly drawn Cjristmas trees!!!
We made out that there was a £100 prize and that a lot of us had had a go at 50p and lost. The idea is that you get an unsuspecting member of staff and when drawing, they get a hard slap across the face and shout of ‘TREE’!!!
It certainly had us entertained when our secretary had a go and then our brave assistant manager Ports steps up!
The camera phones were all on in silent, waiting…..’TREE’! As Pelly slaps him harder than we ever imagined! It took us a while to stop laughing and for Ports’ red face to go down!
I think we could be in line for a few extra runs next week!
