A late free-kick from Champion drifted wide as the home side held on to the points.
Hereford go close again on 81 minutes when Purdie feeds Leabittwer whose cross from the right is headed inches wide by Brodie.
On 78 minutes, Hereford find their first shot on target, a half-hit effort from Brown which causes few difficulties for Maxwell.
But Cambridge continue to look the more dangerous and Tait cuts in to fire a dangerous cross-shot through the six-yard box and wide.
Hereford get their attack going and almost grab an equaliser when Walker’s cross is taken off Brodie’s head for a corner.
A third, again won by Sam-Yorke, swiftly follows and Hughes’ shot deflects behind for a fourth.
The corners continue to come as Leadbitter deflects Hughes’ header behind but this time skipper Ian Miller heads wide.
There’s another flag-kick, won by Sam-Yorke, moments later but, again, the ball is cleared.
Hughes wins a corner from Bush on 59 minutes but Purdie heads the cross from Richard Tait clear.
He’s swiftly followed into the book by Brodie as Hereford replace James, injured knee, with Purdie.
From the free-kick conceded by Brodie, Tom Champion steals in at the near post but directs his header over the bar.
Hereford have a chance on the stroke of half-time when Bush gets on the end of a Pilkington free-kick but heads wide of the far post.
There’s a bizarre incident on 41 minutes when Brown is hauled down on the left flank and then booked for diving.
Hereford respond with a good run from McDonald who slips a pass to Pilkington only for the midfielder to waste the opportunity with a horrid shot which goes over the stand and out of the ground.
Another shot from distance, this time from Greg Taylor, deflects out for a corner.
And from Dunk’s cross, the ball reaches Hughes whose powerful effort from the edge of the box thumps against the bar and comes out.
Cambridge go back on the attack and Evans has to dive to push around a long-range effort from Josh Coulson.
Hereford force a corner after a patient build-up on 19 minutes.
Pilkington sends in the cross and James has a shot deflected out for another flag-kick.
This time Pilkington’s cross is thumped clear and, in a counter-attack, Appiah feeds Dunk who fires wide from 20 yards.
The action swiftly returns to the other end and only a fine flying save from Evans prevents Luke Berry from adding a second for the home side.
The home side take the lead on seven minutes when Appiah neatly side-steps Kingsley James in midfield and drills a 20-yarder beyond Rhys Evans with his left foot.
But Hereford are almost back on terms within seconds when Smith powers in a right-foot effort from a similar distance at the other end with the ball coming back off an upright.
Cambridge open up with some neat, flowing football and an attack down the right brings a shot from Kwesi Appiah which goes high over.
Pilkington is outwitted to concede a corner in the second minute but Rod McDonald makes the clearance from Harrison Dunk’s cross.
HEREFORD boss Martin Foyle is forced into two changes following the return of loanees Michael West and Paul Green to their parent clubs.
Their replacements are Dan Pilkington, who gets his second start of the season, and Sam Gwynne who gets the first start of his second spell with the club.
Rob Purdie, who has been omitted from the squad for the last three matches, returns to the substitutes’ bench.
Season-long loanee Sam Smith leads the Hereford line against his parent club.
