But O’Keefe somehow missed an even better opportunity on 86 minutes, lifting over from a yard out after Rankine’s knock-down.
And the big striker is foiled by the keeper again three minutes later with a good block from a close-range effort.
Rankine warms Carnell’s hands again with a vicious 30-yarder on 77 minutes.
The Bulls are level on 70 minutes with a nice move down the right.
Walker slips the ball to Leadbitter who drill the ball across for Rankine to side-foot home.
Hereford gain a free-kick on 66 minutes in a repeat position from the goal but, this time, Bush’s drive is blocked.
Smith misses a great chance moments later when he misses his header completely from O’Keefe’s cross when only five yards out.
Hereford win a corner on 58 minutes. Purdie delivers the cross but the header flicks off Smith ‘s head and goes wide.
Artus fires in a 30-yarder to draw a save from Dave Carnell as Hereford start the second period on aggressive fashion.
But Hyde are soon on the attack with Almond who clears the bar from the edge of the area.
And the home side miss a great chance to take the lead when Almond brushes off Danny Leadbitter before crossing for Danny Carlton who side-foots over from 15 yards.
The home side take the lead on 42 minutes when O’Keefe misses his challenge on Liam Tomsett who drills home a fierce shot from the edge of the area.
Hyde win their first corner on 40 minutes and there a couple of anxious moments before the ball is cleared.
After a scrappy phase, there is another Bulls corner on 35 minutes. Purdie’s cross finds Luke Graham at the far post but the Bulls’ skipper heads wide of the target.
Purdie forces United’s fourth corner on 24 minutes but it comes to nothing.
But Hyde are back on level terms sixminutes later.
David Poole’s cross from the right is worked back by Danny Carlton to Tom Collins who scores with an unstoppable shot.
A foul on Rankine on the edge of the box on 14 minutes brings an opportunity and the first goal.
Bush lets fly and the ball takes a deflection before ending in the corner of the net.
Smith shows good pace down the left and drags the ball back for Purdie who is also just wide with his effort.
From the second corner, Artus works some space nicely but his shot is narrowly off target.
Smith gets in Hereford’s first shot, a woefully sliced effort which flies yards wide.
Hereford force two corners in quick succession, the second from a Rod McDonald drive which is blocked out.
Hereford strike back and a Sam Smith cross deflects behind for the first which comes to nothing.
Hyde are lively from the kick-off and the early action takes place in their half.
The first shot comes from Liam Tomsett but flies well wide of Rhys Evans’ goal.
HEREFORD boss Martin Foyle is forced into one change for the trip to Hyde after Kingsley James is ruled out with a thigh injury.
Frankie Artus comes in for his full debut with Sam Gwynne named on the bench.
The Bulls are looking for a revenge win after conceding a double to the Manchester side last season.
