HEREFORD suffered their fourth defeat of 2013 after losing an early lead.
Chris Sharp gave the Bulls the lead and, although Marlon Jackson levelled just after the re-start, United were beaten – strangely all of their losses this year have come on Tuesday nights.
After the long trip north, Hereford made one change for their visit to Hartlepool to take on Gateshead.
Skipper Stefan Stam did not travel, allowing a full debut for Rod McDonald but the Bulls were otherwise unchanged.
Former Bull Adam Bartlett was in goal for Gateshead.
Hereford forced an early corner on a blustery evening at Hartlepool but the ball was easily cleared.
A shot by Marlon Jackson, followed in by Kingsley James, brought a second flag-kick on 12 minutes.
Sam Clucas got in a cross from the recycled ball but Josh O’Keefe produced a weak header to send the ball wide.
A third corner arrived on 16 minutes but, again, Clucas’ cross was headed to safety.
The Bulls took the lead on 17 minutes.
James Brown saw a shot well blocked by McDonald and Chris Sharp raced away to slide the ball past Adam Bartlett to open the scoring.
The lead, however, lasted just a minute.
James Marwood raced past two Hereford defenders to deliver a cross which Ryan Donaldson converted at the back post.
Marlon Jackson did well to win a further corner as the Bulls went out to regain the lead.
Clucas’ cross was too long and the ball was cleared for a throw.
Indecision at the back between Bartlett and his defence brought another corner but Chris Carruthers’ shot brought no danger.
Gateshead came close to taking the lead on 29 minutes when Josh Gillies steamed down the right and crossed for Jamie Chandler to drill a shot against the outside of a post.
James Marwood continued the threat, driving in a shot which, fortunately for Hereford, was poorly executed and went a long way wide.
Gateshead forced a second corner on 43 minutes and it brought a second goal.
The ball missed everyone on its way to Donaldson at the far post and his cross back to the far stick was fired into the roof of the net by James Brown.
Gateshead went on the attack at the start of the second period but James Bittner grabbed a cross to end the danger.
But it was the Bulls who were the ones to find the net on 50 minutes.
Jackson raced past a challenge and rocketed a shot past Bartlett to level the scores again.
The attendance was announced as 259, including 35 from Hereford, comfortably the lowest crowd to watch the Bulls in a Conference match.
The previous lowest was 425 at Leigh RMI in October 2002.
Gateshead took the lead again on 55 minutes when Jamie Chandler forced a brilliant save from Bittner but the Bulls keeper was helpless as Brown smashed in the rebound.
Hereford’s marking from corners continued to be suspect and Micky Cummins came in un-noticed to head narrowly wide from six yards as United enjoyed a fortunate escape.
Hereford had a fine chance to level on 78 minutes when Jackson got away to deliver a cross from the right.
The unmarked Sharp made a hash of the shot at the far post, volleying high over when he should have done better.
Hereford won a rare corner on the 83rd minute but the short kick is charged down.
As the clock ran down, United were unable to get much possession to create chances for their four-pronged attack.
