JOHN Eustace, who is at Edgar Street on a month's loan from Stoke City, is likely to be a Hereford United player for only a short-time but his family connection with the club goes back more than half a century.

John's grandfather Ken Eustace, a goalkeeper, also played for the club back in the 1949-50 season.

"Ken joined the club from Rook Athletic, a Birmingham Suburban League club, as an amateur at the start of the 1949-50 season but, with Percy Lovett and Jock Letham competing for the goalkeeping position, his first-team chances were limited," said club historian Ron Parrott.

In fact, Ken was only called upon to make one first-team appearance and there was not a happy outcome. He played his single game for the club at Barry Town where United were beaten 5-0 in a Southern League encounter.
