BELMONT Wanderers have apologised to Hereford United's supporters and cancelled a planned friendly match against the club's triallists on Wednesday.

Wanderers, who compete in the Herefordshire Sunday League, played against United's triallists in a friendly yesterday, following Pegasus Juniors' withdrawal.

Belmont Wanderers have issued an official statement this afternoon:

"I wish to apologise for any upset caused towards Hereford United supporters and can assure everyone that this was not our intentions.

"Our 1st team manager was contacted Friday by a close friend working at Hereford United asking if we would like to play a team of HU trialists.

"This was seen as a massive opportunity for us as a low standard, developing football club to play players of this standard and have a great eye opener at the same time.

"At no point were we aware of the implications this match would cause and we are very sorry if it appeared that we were going against the local communities standing on the current situation at HUFC.

"As a result of this I can assure everyone that we will no longer be going ahead with the planned fixture this coming Wednesday and would again like to place on record our apologies for any bad feeling created.

"As a club we commend and support the loyalty that HUFC fans have demonstrated toward the club, and wish to assure everyone that we did not mean to look like we were being oblivious to this."

Daniel Pitt, Belmont Wanderers.
