HEREFORD United’s defence for the forthcoming League 2 season is beginning to take shape.
Boss John Trewick has added two new names to his squad - one of whom is a very familiar face - and Richard Rose has signed a new contract.
Returning to the club is Conference play-off hero Ryan Green, whose extra-time goal in the final at the Walkers Stadium propelled United back into the Football League three years ago.
Former Wales international Green, who has been at Bristol Rovers for the last three seasons, rejoins the Bulls on a one-year deal.
“We know all about Ryan who had some great years at Hereford,” said Trewick. “He is now 28 which is a great age for a footballer.”
Trewick has also added former Forest Green Rovers defender Darren Jones to his squad.
The 25-year-old ex-Bristol City trainee can play at centre-back, right-back or as a defensive midfielder. Jones comes strongly recommended by Hereford physio Jamie Pitman, alonsgide whom he played at The Lawn for two seasons.
“Jamie knows him well and spoke very highly of him,” said Trewick.
“Darren seems the type of focused, ambitious player that I am looking for.
“He is strong and powerful, wants to do well and comes in with the right attitude.”
With these three signatures, Trewick is close to completing his defensive unit.
“I have five of the six back-four players that I wanted and there have been a lot of phonecalls regarding midfield players, strikers and goalkeepers.
“I am reasonably close to signing a couple of them.”
The fixtures for the new season are published next Wednesday and will be printed in next week’s Hereford Times, together with the draw for the first round of the Carling Cup.
