Turner and Trewick savour promotion

11:05pm Saturday 26th April 2008

HEREFORD boss Graham Turner could not contain his delight at the Bulls’ promotion to League 1.

“It does not come much better than this,” said the Bulls chief. “It is a fantastic day for us.

“We would ideally have liked to have done it at home but there is relief now because we have been in contention for some time and sometimes that tension can get to players.

“It has been a fantastic season for us and a fantastic day today.

“The supporters have suffered a lot over the years and to be going up again in our second season back in the league is terrific.” Turner, whose 13-year Edgar Street career has seen the club achieve financial stability as well as success on the field, found it difficult to rank the day amongst his career achievements.

Before arriving at Edgar Street, Turner had led Shrewsbury into what is now the Championship and had then done the same at Wolves after taking over with that famous club testing the depths of the old Division 4.

“This rates very highly in my career achievements but it’s freshest in the memory,” he admitted.

“Going up at Leicester was a terrific day for us to finally get back up into the League but this is a great occasion.

“You can’t put these days into any sort of order, but this is fantastic.” Coach John Trewick was similarly euphoric.

“This is what football is all about,” he said. “It doesn’t happen very often and we have got to savour two promotions in three seasons.

“It is a fantastic achievement.

“People talk about Jose Mourinho being ‘special’ and all that nonsense but they ought to look a bit closer to home at what has actually been achieved here.

“We have very limited resources at our football club and, even if I say it myself, two promotions in three years is absolutely phenomenal.

“The supporters have been brilliant – let’s hope that next year we can do them proud again.”
